Seabass lentils

Land of the Rising Sun? Maybe. Land of the Myriad Fish? Definitely. I’ve just got back from three weeks with the greatest fish eaters on the planet. And, with an anthropological appetite for joining the natives, I consumed anything piscine that came my way. Except whale sperm.

Returning to the UK, still in awe of the selection of sparklingly fresh fish on display in Japan, I perused the fish counter in Waitrose with dismay. For an island nation we have an inexplicable lack of fishy passion. The usual suspects stared dully up at me.  Salmon, cod, mackerel, herring, haddock,  sea bass. (more…)

Sausages, lentils and salsify

What I want from a mid-week meal after work is something tasty, simple and, as it’s winter, a bit hearty. Sausages meet all those requirements, particularly the plump meaty pork and leek ones I picked up from De Beauvoir deli on the walk home. Bursting with juicy, fatty, tasty pork they looked they would provide a feast in themselves without me having to do too much. There’s something about well-made sausages that sends me off to some sort of gustatory nirvana. They’re just so juicy and tasty and meaty and…and…and you get the picture.

I didn’t fancy mash, and didn’t have any potatoes anyway, but there was a big jar of nutty Puy lentils sitting on the counter top. (more…)

Spicy lentil soup

Sometimes, you need something that will warm your soul as well as your stomach. A meal that imparts the glow you usually only get when sipping a fine whiskey. Those are the times that a salad or stir-fry just won’t cut it. You need something smooth, something…well…warm in the emotional (as opposed to temperature) sense. Everyone has their favourites, their particular comfort food. For me there are several things that hit that spot: red braised pork belly, lamb casserole or hot pot, a rich and creamy mushroom risotto, poached chicken broth with ginger, lemon grass and chilli. And a spiced lentil soup. (more…)
